The "Glycemic Index Diet" was written by Rick Gallop, a former President of The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.



The Glycemic Index (GI) Diet claims, if you can understand a traffic light, you will understand the diet.



Gallop divides food into three groups based on the glycemic index, how fast they cause spikes in blood sugar levels.



He separates food into green light, yellow light and red light foods. Glucose is set at a GI level of 100 and all other foods are compared against it.



Red light foods should be avoided, yellow light foods are avoided during the initial weight loss phase and eaten occasionally during the ongoing maintenance phase and green light foods should form the basis of your diet throughout.



No special foods need to be purchased. Simply look up where your favorite foods fit in the plan, eat green, sample some yellow and avoid red. Period.



Gallop says dieters should expect to lose one to two pounds per week and need not start with a crash diet.



While this is a low carb diet it is not as high protein as most of the other diets and encourages dieters to cut fats as well as carbs. He also encourages exercising for 30 minutes each day and eating three balanced meals that include carbs, proteins and fats.



According to Gallop, followers of the GI diet should consider it a lifestyle change that they will adhere to for the rest of their lives, not a diet. It isn?t easy, though.

Most smokers are worried that when they try to kick the habit they will gain lots of weight. This is a common misconception. Those who have smoked for longer periods of time have a tendency to gain a few pounds. Usually, quitters wont gain any more than ten pounds.

When you decide to kick the habit, you need to begin to repair the body that has been damaged over the years. This can happen through healthy eating and exercise. Many bad toxins have entered the body and it will take time to get rid of them. But dont worry; the body can heal itself when you give it the chance.

Trying to lose weight as a smoker presents many other difficulties. If you try a crash diet, you will be hurting your body even more. Sure you might lose five or ten pounds, but you will gain it back. This leads to discouragement. You dont want to quit smoking because you think youll gain weight, and besides, smoking is an appetite suppressant. Youve got all the excuses in the world, but youll never lose the weight or quit smoking until you realize that a healthy body at the ideal weight takes a well-rounded lifestyle.

When you change the way you eat, sleep, and work, youll get the benefits. Eating is just one part of it:

  • Choosing healthy foods is the most basic element of quality meals. If you buy junk food that is what your meals will be about.
  • Fast Food. Convenience is great, but the food is not.
  • Regular eating patterns. Your body can easily adapt its functions to your schedule, just have one.

Sleep is important when dieting and for a healthy life:

  • Consistency. This ensures a good nights sleep. Quality sleep.
  • Eight hours. The recommended amount will recharge your body. Smoking can disrupt this.
  • Napping. A fifteen or thirty minute nap in the afternoon will give you r body and brain a break. Meditation also works quite well.

Changing your work habits might be needed:

  • Stress. Not good for your dieting and smoking cessation. Change what you can control, otherwise dont worry about it.
  • Your hours. Dont work yourself to death.
  • Take time for yourself. You must devote time to work on changing your lifestyle. Just like your work, it needs to be focused.

When you break down smoking and dieting, you can see that there are many similar functions. Your body and mind become so caught up in the chaos that it gets confused. By simplifying your life, you will be able to get to the source of the problems and move on to a long fulfilled life.

Smoking causes so much damage to the cells in your body. When they start to get infected you will start having problems that are really serious. A diet and lifestyle that are conducive to good health must be your goal if you want to change any aspect of yourself. Its never too late, and youll begin to enjoy your new way of life. Health and wellness will be your new addiction, but its one that you can handle.
